Elon's Gangster cold email, FB's SWAT team, Undercover Billionaire and more!

Note: this newsletter was the last one I sent in Nov 2020 before a near year long hiatus and is a sample of what you can expect when subscribing :)

Hey friend,
Here’s what’s happening this week:
1. There’s a great opportunity to work with Facebook’s internal SWAT team - The Disruptors
2. The most gangster cold email that led to the founding of SpaceX
3. Michelle Obama gives dating advice & Trump’s billionaire doctors
Let’s dig in!
I want to tell you a little bit about one of the best things I was fortunate enough to witness during my brief time working with a $65M VC firm in San Francisco.
Facebook has a program called ‘Disruptors’.
It’s a 1-3 year long accelerator program where FB works with 100 of the fastest growing companies in Silicon Valley.
Essentially it’s this huge FB-VC jerk sesh where FB gives the top companies in Benchmark, Sequoia, A16Z portfolio’s an internal SWAT team to do a health check on their ad account, and get them best in tune with FB’s machine learning engine.
The VC firm would work with the startup to design a growth plan and define their core unit economics. We would then hand that off to the Disruptors team and they would plug it into FB and essentially create a money making machine where businesses can spend $1 on FB ads and get back $3+.
FB does this, as they generate over 50% of their revenue from 16,000 advertisers. That sounds like a lot, but when you consider that there is over 400 million advertisers on FB, it means they make the majority of their revenue from just 0.004% of their clients.
The exciting news is that I’ve managed to convince a few members of the FB Disruptors team to do some consulting on the side in December.
The cost is likely going to be in the $5k range, but if you’re interested in this I’ll work with you to create a growth plan and clearly define your unit economics, and then a current FB Disruptors employee, would do a health check on your FB ad account, and give you a GTM (go to market) plan for effectively running FB ads.
I honestly think this is the best possible service in the advertising market today and that anyone running FB ads should get this as it’s literally not available to anyone other than the top 100 companies in Silicon Valley each year.

The Most Gangster Cold Email Ever
Ever wonder how SpaceX got it’s start?
Well you may soon be able to watch it on the big screen, The Social Network style!
HBO is working with Channing Tatum to produce a TV series on the founding of SpaceX.
Most of you are probably familiar with Elon Musk’s big internet payday after selling PayPal to Ebay.
After the $180m windfall, he famously risked everything by investing $100m in SpaceX, $70m in Tesla, and $10m on Solar City.
He borrowed money for rent.
But how did he start a rocket company?!
Well he reached out to Space veteran, Jim Cantrell with what’s got to me the most gangster cold email ever sent:
“I’m Elon Musk. I’m an internet billionaire, I founded PayPal and Zip2. I could spend the rest of my life on a beach drinking Mai Tais, but I decided that humanity needs to become a multi-planetary species to survive and I want to do something with my money to show that humanity can do that and I need Russian rockets and that’s why I’m calling you.”
Over the next 18 months, Cantrell worked with Musk helping him:
  • Meet rocket experts and a network of leading space minds
  • Travel to Russia 3 times, in an attempt to procure 3 intercontinental ballistic missiles for $7m each (failed)
  • Launch SpaceX as one of its first 4 employees
If you’re aware of any other mic drop cold emails similar to this please fire it my way! I geek out over this stuff.
🤔 Trivia
The current human population is about 7.8 billion. How many trees are there worldwide? 🤔
See answer at the end of this email.
💡 Business Idea of the week
Sell rage merch to angry Trump supporters.
Think hats, flags, bumper stickers etc. that are based around “FRAUD 2020”, “Trump Won”, “Rigged Election” etc.
Create a Shopify store and use TeeSpring or Printful to fulfill the orders so you have no inventory nor overhead besides the cost of the designs + Shopify site.
Sell these via those ghetto display ads on Outbrain and Taboola and try to get placement on right wing sites like Breitbart and send them to conservative influencers like NELK, Ben Shapiro and Steven Crowley. I’d also try to get as many PR hits as I can on left/liberal sites as I can. Why? Well because people will share the hell outta this either supporting or mocking it.
Maybe x% of profits go towards funding investigation of the rigged election. And maybe the investigation is conducted by your rock jpeg and you pocket it.
Check out the brand Grunt Style. These guys do over $100m+ a year playing into the conservative American vibe.
If you think this is crazy go read the story of how AirBnB stayed alive by selling ‘limited edition’ cereal boxes when they were out of cash.
These aren’t meant to be amazing businesses, in the same way that a tinder date isn’t always meant to be your wife. It’s fun and highly profitable. No shame in that!
🍎 Health
Here’s 5 reasons why you should consider intermittent fasting:
1. Evidence suggests that it makes it easier to maintain a lean body composition
2. It gives your digestion a break
3. It helps with sleep if you start your fast 4+ hours before bed
4. Evidence suggests that it has a positive impact with longevity
5. It’s hard, and you should do hard things daily
💰 Wealth
Here’s an interesting article on the 30 year mortgage history in the US.
To me, it’s absolutely insane that US banks are allowed to offer 30 year fixed mortgages for less than 2.75%.
It’s truly a win win for the borrower. If rates fall, you can simply refinance. If rates rise, well you locked in your number for the entire duration of your mortgage.
I wish this system came to Canada, but then again this system is intrinsically broken and will inevitably break the housing market once again.
❤️ Love
Michelle Obama gives advice for those dating in 2020.
So goes on to say this about her marriage with Barack Obama:
“There were times that I wanted to push Barack out of the window. Feelings will be intense. But that doesn’t mean you quit. And these periods can last a long time. But we don’t talk about that, so young couples, they face these challenges, and they’re ready to give up because they think they’re broken. And I just want to say look, if that breaks a marriage, then Barack and I have been broken off and on throughout our marriage, but we have a very strong marriage. And if I had given up on it, if I had walked away from it in those tough times, then I would’ve missed all the beauty that was there as well.”
😊 Happiness
Unless I’m with a girl, I never watch TV or movies. Yet yesterday, I binge watched the only season of Undercover Billionaire where billionaire Glen Stearns goes to a shitty small town with $100, a truck, and a cellphone with no contacts with the goal of building a $1million business in 90 days.
Spoiler alert: he comes up short but nonetheless it was super cool to see him try.
Grant Cardone is on the show in January for season two and I guarantee you that man is going to come out of there with at least a $1million biz!! He’s a dog who could sell oil to the Saudi’s.
Highly recommend you check out the show. Watch it free on YouTube or on the Discovery Channel.
